Proton beam therapy

Dr Lester has a particular interest in proton beam therapy (PBT), a unique form of radiation therapy that uses protons instead of x-rays (photons) to deliver precise and targeted treatment. Dr Lester’s passion for PBT stems from its unique ability to minimise damage to healthy tissues surrounding a tumour, leading to fewer side effects and improved quality of life for patients.

He completed the Penn Medicine Proton Therapy Clinical Education Programme and in April 2018, went on to oversee the first patient treated with high energy proton beam therapy in the UK. Since then, he has maintained a busy proton beam therapy practice, gaining a wealth of experience in the field.

Dr Lester has experience in both conventionally fractionated radiotherapy schedules (20-37 treatments) and ultrahypofractionated (stereotactic) schedules (3-7 treatments) using both x-rays and proton beam therapy.
